Palma – A bustling jewel in Mallorca’s crown this Autumn

Mallorca is known for those blistering summer months where tourists flock from all over the world to enjoy this island’s stunning scenery, world renowned beaches, 5-star facilities and stunning hotels like the Son Julia Country House & Spa.

However, it’s that time of year again…With the arrival of October we can feel the inevitable changes towards autumn taking place. The nights get shorter, an unwelcome cooler temperature reintroduces itself, the trees lose their colour and the beaches and those popular beach resorts here on Mallorca become quieter, less crowded and maybe don’t hold quite the attraction that they once did in the peak months. That’s why we recommend spending more time in the island’s capital and experiencing all that is has to offer. Palma, Mallorca’s shining jewel in the crown is located just 20 minutes from our Boutique Hotel in Llucmajor.

Let’s start the tour

We should start our tour of this mediterranean metropolis from the coast. Here you won’t be able to miss the imposing focal point of this multicultural mixing pot, La Seu or Catedral de Mallorca is the iconic structure and perhaps Mallorca’s most well known monument and although the awe inspiring architecture of this building can appreciated it from afar, a venture inside is highly recommended, even essential. Its majestic atmosphere, gothic style and celebrated artwork all play a part in what makes this place so special. You can even take a tour 44 metres above the city on the rooftop, which provides unique views and the perfect sunset snap.

Just a stone’s throw away you will stumble across Plaza Mayor which is a replica of the famous Plaza Mayor in Madrid but on a smaller scale. Once the headquarters of the inquisition and now considered by many as the centre of Palma and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing bite to eat or drink at one of the many restaurants and bars that hug the walls of the square. Erected in the 19th century this plaza is now often used as the stage in which lots of events, festivals and markets are held, meaning you never know what you might find.

A careful descent down the steps of Plaza Mayor will lead you straight onto another smaller scale copy but this time of the famous pedestrianised La Rambla in the Cataluñan capital of Barcelona. Here you can take a stroll through the city taking cover under the trees that line the street and escape from the autumn sun that still beats down with an unexpected force. At Christmas and certain other times of the year you can find one of the best markets selling locally handmade goods and other items that make the best, most thoughtful souvenirs. This will also take you past the elegant Passeig des Born, the pedestrianised home to tree shaded cafes and surrounded by possibly the best shopping in the city with numerous high street, high fashion and luxury brands.

A change of pace as the sun sets

As you stop to see the sun fall below the horizon and your attention turns to finding the perfect cosy spot for dinner, we recommend you head west towards the beautifully photogenic Santa Catalina – an ever growing area which holds an ambiance of that of a village rather than an area of this major city. Foodies will be more that satisfied with what’s on offer since there is a selection of organic and bio supermarkets (including Santa Catalina Market, which is Palma’s oldest market) which are intertwined with a plethora of fine restaurants and bars which can and should be enjoyed well into the night. These small colourful streets attract all sorts of different people and if you are wanting to socialise then why not keep heading west towards Paseo Maritimo which during the day is a lovely walk along by the famous port of Palma which is one of the main homes of the yachting industry here in Europe and also home to Palma’s nightlife with some of the most popular bars and clubs.

So if you ever imagined Mallorca as a place for summer and only summer then let us change your minds with a trip this autumn. Make your holiday complete by staying with us at the , our luxury 5-star boutique hotel and after extensively exploring Palma, explore our 15th century restored mansion which is as full of character and perfect services as unique as our island of Mallorca.
