These and the host of other updates can be read about in more depth in the previous months blog post about changes at the Son Julia Boutique Hotel. However lets not forget that all these changes are not the only important thing to check out this month on Mallorca, where the celebration of Easter takes centre stage. Semana Santa (Easter in the UK) is an annual event that is celebrated throughout Spain with great importance. Spain ranks among one of the more religious countries in Europe and this can be seen during the week of processions and blessings that are carried out throughout Holy week. The processions and events that take place during this holiday essentially pay tribute to the Passion of Jesus Christ and even for those who are less religious it still provides those who witness it with an unforgettable spectacle and the chance to see another side to this magical country.

Although Spain is more widely known for its lively and vibrant celebrations this week is quite different and here on Mallorca it is no different with a whole traditions to experience there is nowhere better on the island to be than the city of Palma that lies just 25km away from this 5 star luxury hotel. The famous processions begin on Palm Sunday at the churches across the island with the bearing of Palm branches and is followed up on on Maundy Thursday by Crist de la Sang, which is one of the biggest processions during the holiday and involves a representation of the crucified Christ being carried through the streets to remind worshippers of the meaning of Christianity. Good Friday involves the reenactment of the passion of the Christ and later that day the procession of the Holy Burial takes place where members of a brotherhood make their way dressed in penitential robes and conical hoods called Carapunats, carrying religious statues on platforms through the city streets in a rather unnerving but fascinating act of penitence. A lighter side to the whole week is seen on Easter Sunday as the ‘Procession of the Meeting‘ which depicts the reunion of the resurrected Jesus with his mother. This occurs as a statue of Jesus is carried towards a group of women bearing a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Easter Sunday is usually celebrated with the enjoyment of some of the rich gastronomic offering available on the island of Mallorca and that is why here at Son Julia Country House & Spa we wanted to offer guests and even those who aren’t staying with us the chance to experience our first event of the year and try the delicious Easter Brunch which is prepared by our top chefs and served on the picturesque terrace surrounded by the 300 year old rambling gardens.
